As Alabama's state capital, Montgomery is a hub of government, banking and law, as well as one of the state's cultural and entertainment centers. Montgomery is situated in the middle of the southeastern states, less than a 3-hour drive from Atlanta, Birmingham, AL, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Associate of Science in Medical Assisting

The medical assisting program at South University is the first step toward a career of delivering health care treatment as a core member of the medical team. The program is devoted to providing the complete education and experience necessary to work efficiently and effectively in an entry-level position in the medical environment.

The curriculum places emphasis on the students' mastery of clinical and administrative skills, and the program is reinforced by a 200-hour, unpaid clinical externship in a medical office where students practice the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom.

Graduates of this program are prepared to help a physician examine and treat patients, perform laboratory tests, and function as a crucial member of the team that shares the administrative responsibilities of operating a medical care facility.

The medical assisting program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) on recommendation by the Committee on Accreditation for Medical Assistant Education.
Associate of Science in Physical Therapist Assisting

Physical therapist assistants perform components of physical therapy procedures and related tasks selected by a supervising physical therapist. These workers assist physical therapists in providing services that help improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or disease. Patients include accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions such as low-back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries and cerebral palsy.

The professional preparation phase of the physical therapist assisting program is conducted in the evenings and consists of 4 academic quarters of lecture and laboratory courses. An additional 2 quarters are spent in full-time clinical experiences.

Each clinical externship is followed by a return to campus for integration of clinical experiences with didactic materials and the opportunity to correct deficiencies identified in the assessment of the student's performance in the clinics. Externships are chosen from 108 hospitals, nursing homes, sub-acute facilities and outpatient centers with which the program has entered into clinical agreements.
